Gliding competitions are typically run over a period of 9 days. Pilots will be set a challenging task each flyable day with the pilot who completes this task at the fastest speed being awarded the most points – up to 1000. At the end of the competition the pilot with the most points accumulated wins the competition. Unless there are only one or two competition days, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Being able to fly a cross country task well is only part of the equation. Tactics, both short and long term, will probably determine the winners.
